Macedonia

Known as the land of the sun, Macedonia* is situated in southeast Europe, and borders Bulgaria in the east, Greece in the south, Albania in the west and Kosovo** and Serbia in the north.  The landscape is mainly mountainous and although it is a continental country, Macedonia has more than 50 lakes and 16 mountains over 2000 meters high. Due to its natural beauty and mild temperatures, Macedonia* is an attractive tourist destination for everyone who loves nature and good food, and Macedonian national parks are one place you don’t want to miss – they will take your breath away.

Protected areas

WWF`s work in Macedonia* began with the Dinaric Arc Parks project. Mavrovo, Galičica and Pelister national parks have joined the association Parks Dinarides, a network of protected areas of the Dinarides.

WWF evaluated the benefits of these protected areas and organised a study tour, bringing together representatives of other parks from the region to learn about Macedonian protected areas management. Along with all three national parks, protected area Jasen is also member of the Parks Dinarides association.

WWF is currently implementing Protected Areas for Nature and People. towards the sustainable use of natural resources in the Dinaric Arc region as a foundation for socio-economic development. Macedonia is one of the countries where the project is implemented.

* According to the UN, the official name for Macedonia is “The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”.
** This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244/99 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.
